Dispensing a few protein shakes, showing new members how the equipment works and lots of time for your own training – this is how some people imagine working in a gym. However, the reality is often very different. This article shows what all is involved in the job at the gym and why you should take it seriously.
What are the easiest jobs out there? Many people might mention working in a gym – you have a lot of free time, can train yourself at any time and have free access to protein shakes. Ideal for anyone who likes to exercise and earn money for it. But is that really the case?
There are many clichés and prejudices about working in a gym. Many people only see the casual, fun part from the outside. However, like any other job, it is real work. But many people just don’t see that. What does it actually look like in practice?
Anyone who wants to start working in a fitness studio may initially have the same picture. However, anyone applying for a job should know exactly what it’s like behind the scenes. We have therefore compiled the most important tasks of gym employees.
Customer service
You don’t want to become a member of a company that doesn’t offer good customer service. Customer orientation is the be-all and end-all, especially in this day and age. That’s why it’s part of the job at the gym not only to greet members at reception, but also to provide them with comprehensive support and be available to deal with their concerns.
Gym employees are responsible for taking up complaints and finding solutions. If necessary, complaints must be passed on internally.
It is important to remember that there are different types of customers. Some are absolute newcomers who need everything explained to them from A to Z. Others already know exactly what they want. Others already know exactly what they want. Of course, everyone needs to be instructed accordingly and needs the opportunity to ask questions.
Cleaning and maintenance tasks
A gym membership has many benefits. But for members to get their money’s worth, the gym needs to be properly maintained. The employees’ tasks include keeping the equipment clean and solving technical problems. If something is not working, it is the employees’ job to find a solution.
Hygiene and tidiness are expected in fitness studios. Many people therefore take it for granted that it is always clean and tidy. However, the fact that the gym employees are behind this is often overlooked.
Training support
Employees in fitness studios – not just fitness trainers – have the task of advising members and explaining the sports equipment to them. The responsibility is great: after all, incorrect use can lead to injuries such as muscle strains.
It is also part of the work at the gym to create training plans based on the individual wishes and requirements of the members and to adapt them over time if necessary. Depending on the gym and the services offered there, this may also include a customized nutrition plan.
Empathy and sensitivity are required. Tips and motivation are particularly important for unmotivated or uncooperative customers.
Important: It all depends on what the job description is. If you work as a fitness trainer in a gym, you train directly with the members, which is an even bigger task.
Administrative tasks
Working in a gym also means a lot of paperwork. Bureaucracy should not be underestimated in everyday gym life either. There is usually also a certain amount of time pressure, as applications have to be processed and documents submitted on time.
The bureaucratic work in the gym mainly includes:
Sale
If there is a sales area for snacks, shakes and other drinks, serving and selling the goods to members is part of the job at the gym.
It should now be clear that working out in the gym is not just about lifting a few weights and drinking protein shakes. In fact, this job is a real challenge – both physically and mentally.
Many people who work in a gym notice long-term effects. Physically, working in a gym is particularly stressful when training is performed on equipment, as well as during cleaning and maintenance.
However, the mental strain should not be underestimated either. Wherever you work with people, you occasionally come across somewhat difficult candidates. Working in a fitness studio also involves dealing with difficult customers and mastering conflict situations.
In addition, many companies have shift work and low pay. These can be factors that make people think twice about whether they want to work in a gym or not. There is usually an early shift, a lunch shift and an evening shift. Of course, the opening hours vary depending on the gym and sometimes intermediate shifts are also possible.
As stressful and challenging as everyday life in the gym can often be, the experience can also be wonderful. There are many reasons why many people choose to work in a gym.
So the following applies: working out in the gym is definitely something worthwhile, even though everyday life is not all sport and shakes.
Working in a gym is not as easy as it often seems from the outside. But although it is a demanding job, it is absolutely fulfilling. To ensure that it remains so for gym employees, they should be shown appropriate appreciation. That way, gym employees can continue to enjoy their work in the long term. In addition, prospective employees should not take their work in the gym lightly, but should be aware of their responsibilities.
