Results of the 2026 Key Data Study
The latest study, “Key Figures of the Swiss Fitness Industry 2026”, presented by swiss active, paints an extremely positive picture of the sector. More fitness centres, more members and higher revenues highlight the growing social and economic importance of fitness and health in Switzerland.
As of 31 December 2025, 1.45 million people are training in Swiss health and fitness centres – around 16% of the total population and 22.6% of people aged 15 to 65. This represents a member growth of +5.8% compared with the previous year. At the same time, the number of fitness centres has increased to 1,441 locations (+3.3%).
Economically, the sector continues its growth trajectory: total revenue has reached a new high of CHF 1.36 billion (+4.4%). This growth is primarily driven by rising membership numbers, while average membership fees have remained largely stable.
Particularly striking is the strong increase among young exercisers: the 20–29 age group, at 26.1%, has become the largest member group for the first time, overtaking the 30–39 age group. Health, performance and a conscious lifestyle are becoming increasingly important to younger people.
At the same time, fitness training remains relevant for older adults: 7.3% of people over 60 train in a fitness centre – significantly more than during the COVID period.
More than one third of centres primarily position themselves in the field of health and prevention, with almost as many focusing on training and performance. Strength training and cardiovascular training continue to form the foundation of offerings. At the same time, personal training, nutritional counselling and wellness services are gaining in importance.
The industry also places a strong emphasis on quality: 97.5% of centres provided further training for their employees in 2025. In total, the fitness and health industry employs 27,667 people (+3.8%), increasingly establishing itself as an attractive employer.
Sentiment among operators is extremely positive: 9 out of 10 rate their economic situation as good or rather good. The outlook remains optimistic, with a high willingness to invest – particularly in training technologies, digitalisation, and initial and continuing education.
The study clearly shows: the Swiss fitness industry is a central pillar of health prevention and a growing component of the healthcare system.
