Impulse Presentation: Rethinking Prevention – Opportunities for the Fitness and Health Industry

Switzerland stands at a turning point in health policy.
The political and societal foundations of prevention in Switzerland are currently being reshaped. With the Balmer motion and the planned National Prevention Strategy 2040, the federal government faces the task of developing a comprehensive, effective, and long-term sustainable strategy for health promotion and prevention.
At the same time, practical experience shows that many successful measures already exist. However, long-term safeguarding, clearly defined responsibilities, and binding coordination between the federal government, cantons, and health organizations are still missing.
This creates enormous potential for fitness and health providers:
With a view to the new national NCD and addiction strategy starting in 2028 and the recent cuts in prevention funding, now is the right time to take stock – and to look ahead together.
Markus Ossola is a policy specialist at the Swiss Cancer League and is responsible for prevention, early detection, and research. He supports health policy initiatives in Parliament and contributes to the NCD strategy and the new national cancer plan. With a background in quantitative research and regional economic development, as well as extensive political experience, he brings in-depth expertise at the intersection of health policy, public affairs, and evidence-based prevention.
