The fitness industry in Switzerland has never been so strong: record figures for members, centers and turnover

Results of the key data study 2025

The Swiss fitness and health industry is on a historic high. The latest swiss active 2025 key data study shows: Never before have so many people in Switzerland worked out regularly in a fitness center. With 1.37 million active members – around 15.2% of the population – a new record has been set. The number of fitness centers (1,395) and industry turnover (CHF 1.3 billion) also reached new highs.

“People have recognized the relevance of exercise – fitness is now part of a healthy lifestyle,” says Marcus Schwedhelm, President of swiss active. “These figures show impressively that our industry has established itself as an indispensable part of the Swiss healthcare system.”

Growth in all segments

All market segments in the industry – individual centers, chains and specialized providers – were able to make gains. Particularly pleasing: the training frequency of members is higher than ever before at an average of 1.4 sessions per week. There is also optimism when it comes to investments: CHF 249 million has been budgeted for the coming year – an increase of 28% compared to the previous year.

Health at the center

More than a third of fitness centers are clearly positioning themselves in the area of health promotion – a trend that is also reflected in the services they offer. Personal training, functional training and additional digital services are becoming increasingly important.

An attractive employer

For the first time in years, the number of permanent positions is rising, while the number of hourly-paid employees is falling – a sign of professionalization and stability in the sector. In addition, 97.2% of centers provide their employees with further training – a new record.

Comparison with other countries: Switzerland ahead

In a DACH comparison, Switzerland is ahead of Germany and Austria in terms of both penetration rate (15.2 %) and training frequency (1.4 times per week) – further proof of the strength of the local market.

Conclusion: the industry is on track

The fitness and health industry remains on course for growth. With a high willingness to innovate, a stable economic situation and social relevance, it is now more than ever a key partner in the field of prevention and health promotion.
